McKenzie Confronts His Fears

Liten here: http://peterstanway.podomatic.com/entry/2010-12-31T07_41_12-08_00
The air was so humid that McKenzie's cheap off-the-shelf spectacles slid down the greasy slope of his aristocratic aquiline nose. Almost habitually and certainly
without thinking, he pushed them back up to the bridge where beads of sweat
formed between his furrowing eyebrows.
At any cost, McKenzie was determined to finish his paper that he would present
before the scientific intelligentsia at the World Summit for Unilateral Disarmament
in Sao Paulo, Brazil that afternoon.
For a moment he was distracted, was that a creak he heard on the well-worn
stairway outside of his shabby hotel room or was his fertile mind playing
tricks on him.....?
We’ve all been there, or have we? Is McKenzie so different from you and I? Under pressure, our anxiety levels rise and with that comes the accompanying psychosis….paranoia and irrational fear.
Let’s see what happens next….
McKenzie smiled inwardly, why was he anxious? His mind went back to the time when, as an eight year old boy, he woke up during the night struggling to make sense of the
worst technicolour nightmare he had ever had.
His pj’s were sticking to him with sweat, his eyes, like organ-stops, stared
wildly into the unyielding darkness that surrounded him. His heart was racing
so fast that it felt like it would burst out of his chest. Fear paralysed his
throat as he struggled to scream out, ‘Dad!’
‘What is it son?’. The strong, reassuring sound of his dad’s voice pierced the
darkness and dissolved McKenzie’s fears….
Lost, alone and gripped by fear, we all need to know that there is someone we can call out to for help. Who do you cry out to when fear overcomes you?
Jeremiah 33:3 tells us what God says in the bible, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things
you do not know.’
When we are disorientated and perplexed, we need to hear a strong reassuring
voice that takes control of our situation, makes sense of our confusion and
encourages us with the promise of great things to come.

McKenzie Meets Seduction

McKenzie Meets Seduction: http://www.getthegist.net
The heavy rain beat steadily down on the cathedral steps turning the dust to mud and then washing it away. Spain in the rain – not what he was hoping for! McKenzie sat under the canopy of a café situated on one side of a very beautiful plaza and thoughtfully sipped his café con leche. Normally, he would have savoured this moment while indulging in his favourite pastime; people watching, but the cobbled plaza, now shiny and treacherous, was almost deserted.
McKenzie focussed on the drenched horse-drawn open carriage that waited in vain for tourists. Statuesque, the chestnut brown mare stood completely immobile seeming to enjoy this welcome respite and happily unaware of the unseasonably bad weather. Sun-beaten, the gypsy driver sat forlornly wrapped in a brightly coloured thin plastic poncho that caught the drips from his sodden stiff brimmed hat that, in turn, sheltered the permanent Ducados cigarette burning slowly between his sardonic silent lips.
Would she keep their appointment? Was he bothered? McKenzie had developed an inherent trust in God that gave him the confidence to believe that no matter what happened, everything would work out for the best. Was he bothered? Not at all. However, when Maria Lopez de las Flores appeared out of a narrow lane on the other side of the square, his heart did skip a beat. There was an air of elegance and sophistication like two sisters that accompanied Maria wherever she went.
McKenzie scrutinised every inch of her as she made her way towards him. Her jet-black hair tightly pulled back from her pale sculptured face. Her dark eyes like mysterious deep pools and her ever-so-slightly pouting red lips perfectly complimenting her crimson-red shawl meticulously draped from her pushed-back shoulders like a proud matador’s cape after the kill. She exuded confidence. He was going to have to tread very carefully with this one.
He stood to his feet as she approached. Maria locked her hazel eyes on McKenzie’s Arian-blue stare. She put out her hand for him to welcome her. Taking her fine black calf-skinned glove by the finger tips he bowed slowly to kiss the back of her delicately perfumed and stylishly covered hand.
‘Charmed’ said McKenzie, smiling broadly. ‘Thank you for coming’.
‘The pleasure is all mine’. Maria’s voice resonated from her diaphragm like a treasure that had been hidden until now. Her teeth sparkled although there was no sun. She radiated her own light.
‘Steady…’, mused McKenzie, convinced that Maria could read his thoughts…..
….With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose.… (Proverbs 7:21-22)

McKenzie has an Encounter

McKenzie has an Encounter
McKenzie sat bolt upright his eyes as wide as organ-stops. He was completely conscious yet his dream continued in vivid technicolour. There, in front of him, was a man, an incredibly handsome man, who seemed to emanate a brilliant bright light. His shoulder length hair was illuminated to the ends making it look like there was a halo around his head.
The light, although powerful was not glary, it had a translucent effect that shimmered like a gossamer haze revealing the full spectrum of a magnificent rainbow arching around his unexpected visitor.
McKenzie felt elated; overwhelmed with joy. His guest’s face shone with a broad friendly smile full of perfect pearly-white teeth. His eyes creased with laughter-lines.
‘Peace be with you’, he said with a voice that sounded like a waterfall. A wash of peace, unlike anything McKenzie had ever felt, flooded over him.
‘I am your friend’. Instantly McKenzie felt his heart melt and absolute trust mixed with tremendous adulation gushed out of his innermost being. He had never felt such love for anyone or anything. McKenzie was transfixed.
‘I am with you always’ McKenzie heard as he watched his friend’s powerful arms open outwards. His gracious flowing movements created dark bands where they blocked his radiating light. A kaleidoscope of colours spilled over McKenzie’s upturned face. He knew that his new companion loved him enough to die for him. His heart beat so strongly that McKenzie thought it would burst. As he stared open-mouthed, his new best friend began to evaporate into the ethereal mist and to disappear into the atmosphere that was pregnant with his presence.
McKenzie continued to stare into the empty space that had been temporally filled by the most glorious being he had ever seen. His mind could make no sense of it, but inside – deep inside, he knew he need never fear anything ever again. The sound of silence enveloped him as he slowly lay back down; his heart was still thumping inside his chest.
‘Thank you’, he said out loud to his friend. McKenzie was so overwhelmed he thought he would explode with gratitude.
‘Thank you, McKenzie’, came the response, like a gentle whisper that carried him off into the most peaceful sleep he had ever known.
Matthew 28:20 says……“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

McKenzie Goes Shopping

McKenzie pondered pensively on how best to avoid the inevitable. What a quandary! Online shopping was infested with dangerous predators of another kind. There was nothing else for it. He would stuff his ears with cotton wool, put on his bravest smile and, behind his clenched teeth, he would jolly-well grin and bear it….

Taking a deep breath, he stepped out onto yesterday’s snow that crunched gingerly under his shifting weight. He caught the first bus heading towards the city centre. His brain was as numbed, as the frozen monochrome landscape that underwhelmingly drifted past his almost opaque, dirty window. Cocooned in his own thoughts McKenzie’s introvert bubble was about to burst...

As soon as he entered the mall, the sound of Christmas musak grated on McKenzie’s jangled nerves. Every year it was the same old, same old. It was now official; McKenzie hated Wham and Slade!

It wasn’t that McKenzie disliked Christmas, he had mixed feelings about it, but he most assuredly despised the overt commercial exploitation of it. This was not some Dickensian ‘bah-humbug’, rather it was, plain and simply, McKenzie’s opinion based on his observations.

However, because of his feelings, McKenzie loathed Christmas shopping. He didn’t mind buying gifts for the people he loved but he detested being dragged into the bedlam that goes with it.

Matthew 1:23 says…..“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

McKenzie is Searching

The trees, limp and heavy after days of incessant rainfall, hung stoically in the eerie stillness. The inky black sky seemed to crack open for the briefest of moments and a full moon slid out from behind a slow moving invisible cloud spilling light over the forest floor like a tremendous symphony of chiaroscuro.
Bright beams cut through the dense canopy and splashed pools of iridescence onto the damp, thick camouflage of the wild forest floor. A magnificent cathedral of majestic Kapok Trees stood frozen all-too-briefly in time for the single strobe of the moon’s creative glare.
Would they ever find what they were looking for…..?
A trickle of sweat slowly made its way down McKenzie’s rigid spine. He could trace its course. Beads of perspiration congregated on his furrowed brow. The humidity was tangible. It was two o’clock in the morning and McKenzie longed for the secret solitude of his humble camp-bed back at the hut he fondly called home.
What was he doing lost in the merciless undergrowth of the Amazonian Rainforest? Why was he searching for someone he barely knew?
The child had vanished almost thirty-six hours ago. McKenzie’s hand had shot-up without his permission when the police officer made an appeal for volunteers. It could have been his daughter who was missing….it could have been him. His mind drifted back to a time when he snuggled into his mother’s lap and, with his eyes closed, his mum stroked his hair as she told him this story from the bible…..
Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ (Luke 15:3-6).

The God of All mankind

Jeremiah 32:27…… “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”
…..all mankind, what does that mean? Surely it means everybody! The Lord God is the God of all mankind, everybody. He created us all, every one of us.
Time was when it was possible to tell the nationality of a person from the way they looked. Spaniards had sallow skin and black hair; Scandinavians had blonde hair and blue eyes. Nowadays, Spaniards can have blonde hair and blue eyes and vice-versa.
Why is that? Maybe it is because of the ease of international travel, cross-cultural relationships and the insidious erosion of our unique national identity. Most shops across Europe stock similar products. In fact, most western countries have broad similarities. Wherever tourists travel anywhere in the world, they can often enjoy, should they choose to do so, the same consumer goods as they have at home. How long will it be before countries and continents merge into one world-wide identity?
With global advertising and media being broadcast from satellites into every nook and cranny on earth, it is possible to watch the same TV programmes anywhere. The stage is set for a one-world economy that will be serviced by a one-world currency and hard on its heels, prepare for a one-world religion.
However, some things are sacrosanct and religion is one of them. In a world where indistinct and unclear national boundaries make it increasingly more difficult to define our true identity, one thing that can keep us unique, no matter where we live, is our religion.
Please note that I am saying religion, not faith. Religion is man-made and it can be used by mankind to manipulate multitudes. We must, in view of that, stand and resist being deceived by schemes that speak of a new world order.
Religion is the enemy of every Christian. We must not allow the frontiers of our faith to blur into ecumenicalism. We have to stand-up for Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the God of all mankind. There is no other way to connect with our Maker.
Will the proliferation of global communication make God more available to everyone? Undoubtedly, but be careful, this ‘God’ may not be the God of our Christian faith. Do not be deceived! Will all mankind embrace Christianity? I hear a resounding ‘no!’ from many quarters. Why not, I ask you? Is anything too hard for our God?
Lord Jesus, may all mankind reach out to you. Amen

Lift Up Your Hands

Psalm 134:2-3….. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD. May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.
The beginning of this scripture reminds me of one time, after an argument with my mother, I rushed out to our church meeting. I was praising God with my hands uplifted when I sensed the Lord asking me what I was doing. I knew I had to go back to my mother’s house to apologise to her.
With much weeping and repenting, I asked my mother to forgive me and, in the midst of all that was going on, my dad was wonderfully saved. By doing what I was told, the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, blessed me and my family.
I understand that uplifted hands are a gesture of worship and praise before the Lord but adopting this posture is not, in itself, worship or praise. Neither is singing. It is in our spirit where true worship originates and, on that particular occasion, I had a wrong spirit.
We are looking here at Psalm 134. It is not by accident that it comes after Psalm 133, a well known Psalm that that speaks of unity. It says where there is unity, ‘the Lord bestows His blessing, even life for ever more.’
If we cannot live in harmony with those people closest to us, how can we expect to be at one with the Lord? How can we expect to be blessed?
Christianity is not about charismatic posturing, it is about character building. Our aim is to love others as Jesus Christ loves them – unconditionally and without compromise. When we do that, not only will our hands stretch upwards to heaven but our praises will too.
Lord Jesus, thank you for showing us the importance of character. Amen.

The Lord Speaks to Us

The Lord Speaks to Us
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
1 Kings 19:11-13…….The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by."
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

Make no mistake about it, the Lord speaks to us. He speaks to us all the time not only on rare occasions and He wants us to hear what He has to say. The problem is, we do not always know how to hear Him.
The Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, is so creative that He is not limited in the methods He uses to communicate. As in the case of Elijah above, a prophet who regularly heard from God. The Lord could have easily spoken through the phenomenal display of dramatic events that preceded what He had to say but, instead, He chose to speak in a gentle whisper.
Often we have a mindset about how God will speak to us and because of that we limit God to our mindset and we miss what He has to say. It is, therefore, important that we remove our mindset and prepare ourselves to hear God by any means that He chooses to use.
If you are born again and baptised in the Holy Spirit you can hear the Lord speak (although He may have begun to speak to you even before that). As Christian believers how can we pray effectively, or minister in any way, if we do not hear from God?
God loves you and He wants you to know it. He will speak into your heart and into your spirit through the Holy Spirit. It is not common to hear God speak in an audible voice.
Prayer is dialogue with God. The bible says that we should pray continually. This means that we should be in constant dialogue with God. In a dialogue one person speaks and the other listens, then the listener responds back to the speaker and so on. This is how the Lord wants us to live out our Christian lives; being led by the Holy Spirit in a continual dialogue with God.
If you just pause for a moment and listen; be still and listen. You will hear God speaking to you in the breath (Hebrew = ruach) of His Spirit. Can you hear that gentle whisper? What is He saying to you? Let the dialogue, a conversation between two lovers, begin…..
Lord Jesus, thank you for speaking to us, please help us to hear you. Amen

Jesus Christ the Rock

Jesus Christ the Rock
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
Exodus 33:21-22……Then the LORD said, "There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.
This amazing Old Testament scripture speaks so clearly of Jesus Christ. He is the Rock of our salvation. When we put our faith in Him, when we stand in His truth, His character and His lordship, we cannot be shaken.
This scripture, however, says a lot more than that. It was on the cross at Calvary that Jesus Christ was glorified….’wait a minute’ you may say, but it is true. In the midst of all the blood and anguish; in the drama of the fiercest spiritual battle ever, Jesus was glorified.
The cross was His place of coronation. Jesus was not only crowned King of the Jews, He was also crowned King of Kings. Some could only see what was happening in the natural realm but others, with the eyes of the Spirit, could perceive the revelation of what was happening in the spiritual realm and they beheld His glory (John 17:5…. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.)
Jesus was pierced for our transgressions; the Rock was cleft for us. Every Christian believer has their identity in Christ. We have been placed into Him, into His wounds that He bore on the cross for us. We have been sealed into Christ by God and our lives are now hidden with Christ.
Christ Jesus who has triumphed over sin and death is now seated at the right hand of God and we are with Him. We can stand firm in our position of freedom and victory. We can shine in and for His glory.
Thank you Jesus, we have been placed in the Rock of our salvation. Amen.

Escapology versus Eschatology

Escapology versus Eschatology
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
Romans 8:19……The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.
Jesus is coming back soon. The bible has told us what to watch out for and the signs are clear for all to see. What is not so obvious is the answer to the question; at what point will Jesus take the church away from the earth?
The scriptures tell us that there is a time of terrible ordeal to come. It is called the time of tribulation or distress. Matthew 24:21 says…For then there will be great distress, unequalled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equalled again.
Christians and theologians have debated over this issue for a long time. The branch of theology that is concerned with the End Times and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ is called eschatology.
There are basically three points of view on the timing of the return of Jesus to take away every Christian believer (the church), they are; pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation or post-tribulation. I believe that God is a good and loving God who does not want His children to unnecessarily suffer; therefore, I side with the pre-tribulation camp.
I have used a play-on-words to help illustrate this….my eschatology is synonymous with escapology. I believe that the church will escape the coming wrath.
The earth will not be a place to be once the church has gone. The dispensation of grace will have come to an end and those left behind will come under the judgement of God. Do not wait until it is too late. Avoid the wrath of God. Make sure that you will be in that number when the saints go marching into the presence of God.
Jesus is coming back soon, do not delay. If He is not your Lord and Saviour, ask Him into your life today.
Lord Jesus, thank you that you are coming back to rescue those who know and love you. Amen

Jesus was Resurrected

Jesus was Resurrected
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
1 Corinthians 15:52…… in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
Jesus was not resuscitated, He was resurrected. There is a huge difference. Resuscitation brings the dead body back to the life it left; same body, same defects and the same limitations.
Resurrection raises us up from the dead in a new, transformed body. The resurrected body is able to do things that our old body could not. Jesus was able to hide his identity as on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:15-16). He was also able to enter a locked room as He did in the Upper Room when He appeared to His disciples after He was raised from the dead (John 20:19).
After the Rapture, when every Christian is with Jesus in heaven, our new resurrected bodies will not know sickness or decay. We will live with Jesus for ever.
When I was talking about this on TheWayCM Spanish Podcast, I discovered that the word for resurrection and resuscitation are the same word in Spanish; resuscitation. I was shocked, how misleading is that? This is what motivated me to film and write this week’s Gist. As I said earlier, resuscitation and resurrection are not the same; they are very different.
If I am not raptured before I die then on the sound of the last trumpet, when Jesus comes back for all believers both dead and alive, I want to be resurrected, not resuscitated.
Come Lord Jesus and take us to be with you in new, transformed and glorious bodies just like yours. Amen

Great Expectations

Great Expectations
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
Isaiah 41:9…… See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.
I don’t think it’s something in the air and it’s definitely not something in the water…. it’s more likely to be something in the heavenlies because God is up to something. Can you sense it in your spirit? I am excited….
That ‘something’ that God is up to is something big…. huge. I have great expectations. Change is coming; it’s springtime. The trees are bursting with life. It is a time to blossom and grow.
In the UK, we are on the threshold of a general election. There is a promise of change from all political parties. People are restless, they are looking for change, they want change.
Ironically, we live in a world that changes constantly; nothing seems permanent. People nervously scurry from one inadequate ‘solution’ to another but in a topsy-turvy lifestyle of extreme changes we are caught-up in a world of lies, excuses, deception and cover-ups. If change is coming, how can we consolidate it? How can we know that, this time, it will be a change for good?
We cannot trust the politicians, or the bankers, or the media or even the weather. In this season of election it is time to vote for Jesus. He alone is the Unchanging One, the same yesterday, today and forever.
I believe we are about to see the biggest wave of global evangelism ever and it will be effortless.
I believe that the Holy Spirit is about to draw unprecedented multitudes into the kingdom of God. Like shockwaves from a nuclear explosion it will start in the epicentre of our own homes and families and continue out to the ends of the earth. Like a seismic aftershock, no-one will be left untouched.
Get ready for this harvest of souls, they will fill our homes and flood our hearts. It is our responsibility to show them Jesus.
Thank you Lord Jesus, we have voted for you to be our leader. Amen.

To be Born Again

To be Born Again
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
John 3:7…… You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'
The phrase ‘born again’ has become so acceptable that it has made its way into the secular world. It is a phrase that is often used and frequently abused. It is maligned by non-Christians and not properly understood by far too many Christians.
Let’s settle the matter right now; what does it mean to born again?
To initiate the process, those who want to be born again must first want to die to their old way of life. Repenting of a sin-filled and self-centred lifestyle, we must ask for forgiveness and believe that we are cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ, whom we believe is the Son of God, who died, was buried and rose again for anyone who chooses to follow Him as the Lord of their life.
This decision will activate our soul to interact with the Holy Spirit and we will be born again. We will be regenerated in our mind, will and emotions. We will be completely recreated anew and become born again Christians. We have taken a step into the kingdom of God; the first step on our journey of salvation.
To complete this initial process we must also be baptised in the Holy Spirit. If we ask, we will receive power from Jesus that will complete our conversion and enable us to follow Him all the days of our life.
The speed of this process and the power that is manifest in our life is determined by each individual. The Holy Spirit will not take over to control our lives but will operate in accordance to how much control we give Him. Even if we surrender completely to the lordship of Jesus, we still set the parameters. The Holy Spirit will not cause us to loose control. He will not override our decisions, our choices or our will. We have self-control. Therefore, we choose how we behave.
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to reveal Jesus and to make Him known. As He works in us and through us it is to do just that. As He leads us on the path prepared for us to walk in and, if we choose to walk in that way, He will conform us into the likeness of Christ. In doing so, He will draw all men to Jesus and to the Cross-roads of their own destiny.
Lord Jesus, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to help us to be born again and become more like you. Amen.

Personal Pentecost

Personal Pentecost
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
Acts 9:18….. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again.
Saul of Tarsus hated Christians. He hunted them down and persecuted them, even to death. He was a self-righteous Pharisee who learned his theology at the feet of the famous Gamaliel.
On the road to Damascus he was struck blind. There followed a dramatic sequence of events that led to his sudden conversion, the cure of his blindness at the hands of a Christian disciple Ananias and his baptism. Saul became Paul and eagerly accepted his commission to preach the gospel of Christ first to the Jews but mainly to the Gentiles.
Paul was not among Jesus’ disciples when Jesus lived on the earth. After his spectacular conversion leading to personal insight and revelation of the Gospel, he became one of the most zealous early Christians. His missionary letters comprise almost one-third of the New Testament.
Paul had a personal pentecost experience that was every bit as powerful as the first outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. As a result of which he was completely changed. Surely this is what conversion literally means.
Every Christian needs this experience. We all need our own personal pentecostal encounter with the Holy Spirit. It is only the beginning of our salvation journey to meet Jesus at Calvary, but after Easter comes Penetecost and with Pentecost comes the power to change.
Christians cannot fully function in a Christ-like lifestyle until we have been set on fire by the power of the Holy Spirit; this fire that ignites an unquenchable passion for Jesus.
Have you had your own personal penetcost? Why don’t you ask the Holy Spirit to change you today?
Lord Jesus, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to baptise us with power from on high. Amen.

Sabbath

Sabbath
Today, around 2,000 years ago, it appeared to everyone who knew or even cared about Jesus Christ that after a humiliating defeat on Calvary’s Cross, He lay dead and buried in a borrowed tomb in Jerusalem.
It was the Sabbath.
Behind a huge stone that blocked the entrance, Jesus was busy. The cross had been a triumph, it was His place of coronation and not only as king of the Jews but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, He had conquered death and was about to rise from the grave….

No More Death

No More Death
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
Romans 8:19-23……The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Man’s sin in the Garden of Eden not only meant expulsion from the presence of God and no more relationship with Him but it also dealt a death-blow to the whole of creation.
Man, who was intended to live forever in sublime harmony with God and all of His perfect creation, was now doomed to die outside of intimacy with God on a tainted and decaying planet.
God, in His limitless mercy sent Jesus Christ, His sinless Son, to make a way for mankind to be reconciled to God, to conquer death, to live with Him in a heavenly paradise and, ultimately, as sons of God, to reign with Him in a new heaven and a new earth forever.
All of creation groans in anticipation of paradise regained as does our spirit-man in the knowledge that not only are we redeemed back into a pre-fall closeness with God but our spirit and soul will occupy a new resurrected body that will never decay.
Heaven is an awesome place. None of earth’s flaws are there and none of our flaws will be there either. It is a magnificent place where everything is perfect.
Are you eagerly looking forward to going there?
There is, of course, only one way to get to heaven and that one way is through Jesus Christ. We must believe that He is the first-born Son of God who made the way open for us, as sons of God, to get there.
As believers in Him; as Christians, we must choose to live our lives in obedience to Him. In doing so, others will come to know Him and they too will be with Him in paradise forever.
Much as we look forward to going to heaven, it is our purpose on earth to share the good news of its accessibility with as many people as possible before we go there.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for opening-up heaven to all who become Christians. Amen

Child of Light

Child of Light
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
Ephesians 5:8…… For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
When we live in darkness we cannot see anything. We cannot see the things that could trip us up and cause us to hurt ourselves. We cannot see the things that cause us to stumble and fall.
Praise God, when we invite Jesus Christ into our lives He comes as the Light of the World and He dispels all darkness from within us. With Jesus in our hearts and the Holy Spirit guiding us, we can clearly see everything illuminated by His marvellous light. We can see what is going on around us and we can see the path prepared in advance for us to walk in.
Life without Jesus is a dark and scary place but with Christ our fear is turned to faith. God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.
Thank you for your glorious light, Lord Jesus. Amen

Respect

Respect
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12…….Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Respect seems to be something that has lost its meaning these days. The whole perception of respect has, apparently, been twisted into something that is contrary to its original concept. As a verb, respect is defined as; to hold in esteem or honour
When I was young and growing-up, I was taught to respect my elders and those in authority like policeman and teachers. Today, however, I am shocked at the lack of respect that many young people have for anyone, especially those in authority, including their parents, and even themselves.
Yet, paradoxically, the word respect has become part of popular phraseology with some of our contemporary youth culture. They seem to like the sound of the word without understanding its original meaning.
Gangland leaders demand respect, that is, they extort honour through bullying and intimidation. They do not earn respect from their peers, they command it – or else!
Maybe I am getting old and perhaps I was not so different when I was young and rebellious, but I am horrified at what I see going on around me. The boundaries of permissible adolescent behaviour have been pushed back further than I can ever remember. I know that the media can exploit this but I have seen it for myself.
Surely we, the parents and grandparents, must shoulder much of this responsibility. As Christians our role model is Jesus Christ and our guidelines must be the bible. It is not enough to be aware of this lack of respect and woefully shake our heads, shrug our shoulders and criticize. We have to do something about it.
It is far better to be an example than a judge. We will be swimming upstream against a strong contra flow of current trends, but hey, isn’t that what fish (Christians) do?
<º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))>< <º))))><
Lord Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to have respect. Amen

The Misconception of Suffering

The Misconception of Suffering
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
John 10:10….. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
I have met many Christians who have a misconception of suffering. They seem to think that suffering is a legacy that we inherit when we become a Christian.
Wrong! Jesus Christ went to the Cross to set us free from sin, suffering and death. He hung on that Cross in our place and took every rotten thing we had upon Himself. He died with the full weight of fallen man upon Him. He died instead of you and me.
However, that was not the end. After three days Jesus rose from the dead; having conquered sin, suffering and death. He rose triumphantly from the grave and He is alive today and for evermore.
We, who believe in Jesus Christ and who have asked Him to be our Lord and Saviour are now free from the shackles sin, suffering and, ultimately, death. It was for freedom that Christ has set us free. Jesus came to give us life in all its fullness not life in all its foulness.
When we come to Jesus at the Cross and we repent before Him; when we ask Him into our lives and exchange all we are and have for all He has to offer; when we truly surrender to His lordship forfeiting everything, then, and only then, can we say that we have been crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20).
The Divine Exchange takes place and we no longer live but Christ now lives in us. Christ who died and rose again for us. What a glorious, magnificent Saviour. Our legacy is that, through faith, we have become sons of God, reconciled to our Father for all eternity.
Suffering does not come from God, it comes from a corrupt human race, a fallen planet and the pit of hell. Do not mistake persecution for suffering. Persecution will come but we can overcome persecution because God’s grace is sufficient for us.
There is no reward for stoic Christian suffering; that is a lie that comes from the father of all lies. Jesus has set us free from suffering but we need to believe it, appropriate it and overcome the world through faith in the finished work of Calvary.
It was for the joy that was set before Him that Jesus endured the Cross, now enter into His Joy.
Lord Jesus, thank you for breaking the chains that bound us. Amen

The Centrality of the Cross

The Centrality of the Cross
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
1 Corinthians 2:2….. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
The Cross where Jesus Christ was crucified is so pivotal that it even determines our western-world calendars. Traditionally, we speak of events in history taking place BC; before Christ and AD; (Anno Domini) – the year of Our Lord’s birth, the official start date of the Gregorian calendar.
However, it is not only in the establishing of historical times and dates that gives the Cross of Jesus such importance, far more important are the events that took place there.
Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son – God manifest on earth, was crucified on Calvary’s Cross. The innocent Lamb of God who never sinned, took your sin and mine upon Himself and paid the penalty for our sin on our behalf so that, if we choose, we can be reconciled to His Father in heaven.
If we believe this and acknowledge that our sins are now paid for by the blood of Jesus, we will be forgiven, washed clean and adopted into the family of God as sons and co-heirs with Christ. His Father will become our Father.
Jesus won a tremendous victory on the Cross for us. He overcame sin and death and made the way for us to spend eternity with Him.
That’s not all, when we ask Jesus to forgive us and invite Him to be not only our Saviour but our Lord also, we embark on an amazing journey of salvation that leads to our destiny and the fulfilment of the purpose of our life on earth.
After His death on the Cross and His burial, on the third day Jesus rose from the grave. He overcame death to give us the hope of eternal life. Forty days after His crucifixion He ascended back to heaven telling his disciples as He was taken into the clouds, to wait on the promise of the Holy Spirit.
Ten days after His ascension, on the first day of the Feast of Pentecost, that promise came to pass when the Holy Spirit filled the 120 followers of Jesus who were gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem.
By the end of that day there were 3,000 more people added to their number through the outworking of what the prophet Joel speaks of in Chapter 2 of his book in the bible….
A series of cataclysmic events starting at Calvary’s Cross and spread over the next fifty days have changed the whole course of mankind. Have they changed you?
Lord Jesus, thank you for the Cross. Amen

I am Coming Soon

I am Coming Soon
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
Revelation 22:7…… “Behold, I am coming soon!”
It is no secret, Jesus Christ is coming back soon. The question is; are we ready? The answer is, sadly, no!
All the signs are there, End Times prophecy is being fulfilled on an almost daily basis yet the church, Christians at large, are apathetic and oblivious ….whatever. Even non-Christians are aware that there is an almighty shaking of the planet taking place before our very eyes. This is our wake-up call.
The word ‘soon’ in the NIV translates as ‘quickly’ in the KJV of the bible. The word ‘quickly’ in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, is ‘tachu’. ‘Tachu’ is defined as; without delay, soon or (by surprise) suddenly….the word for the instrument that records the driver’s speed in a commercial vehicle is, ‘tachometer’.
The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back with His foot going down on the accelerator pedal. He could be here anytime. If He came in the next hour would we be ready?
Is Jesus delaying His return to give us an opportunity to be ready? His tremendous grace and great mercy towards us could be why He has not yet returned. Oh yes, there are still prophecies to be outworked; events to take place, but God, in His sovereignty, could orchestrate these in the twinkling of an eye.
If you knew that Jesus was coming back in three days, what would you do to be ready? Who would you contact, who would you visit, what would you say and what would you do?
My point is that time is short, there is no time for lethargic inactivity. We should live our lives as though Jesus WAS coming back tomorrow.
Lord Jesus, please help us to be ready. Amen

What a Saviour

What a Saviour
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
Colossians 1:15-16 …. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
Our God is an awesome God. Jesus Christ is the manifestation of God; He is both man and God. He is the firstborn and was with the Father when their was nothing else in the beginning. He spoke the words His Father gave Him and by His word all that is was created. The Holy Spirit, active in all of this, hovered over what was made.
The Holy Trinity, therefore, was united in glorious harmony for the magnificent creation of a perfect world that sin was soon to taint.
God, who was put out of reach because of our filth and shame, made a way for us to regain paradise. In a surge of phenomenal power and awesome love, God made Himself manifest on the earth; Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World became the only way by which fallen mankind could be reconciled to our Father.
What a Saviour, what a Redeemer; what a price He paid for our lives. What manner of love is this that we should be called children of God, but that is what we are? (see 1 John 3:1).
Jesus Christ came down from heaven and He lived among us as the sinless, perfect sacrifice. He atoned for us at His crucifixion and made the way for us to become at one with God. He took our punishment upon Himself. He was momentarily separated from our Father and He died in our place. He even went to hell where He took back the authority that Satan usurped from man when he deceived Adam in the Garden.
Triumphantly, he conquered death and rose again to give us the hope of eternal life. As He ascended back to heaven He gave us permission to use His supreme authority to help us to live the victorious Christian life and to be with Him forever – what a Saviour!
Let’s choose to live as God intended. If you have not done so already, ask Jesus to be your Saviour and allow Him to be your Lord……come back to the Father today.
Lord Jesus, you are wonderful. Amen

Read the Instructions

Read the Instructions
Video: http://www.getthegist.net
Proverbs 8:33 ……. Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.
Are you one of those people who open the package and read the instructions or are you one of those who ignore the instructions preferring to work it all out for yourself?
Sometimes the instructions are not easy to follow but, if we work out what they mean we will benefit by accomplishing what the manufacturer intended.
Sadly, some Christians have the same attitude towards the bible; the instruction manual for life. There are those who try to work it out for themselves and do not quite manage to put it together properly and there are those who read the bible, listen to the Father’s instructions, and get wise with heavenly wisdom.
Recently, at TheWayCM, we have embarked on a huge multimedia learning curve. We now have to go deeper into software programmes to find potential functionality that was hidden to us when we were doing less. As we have made progress in our multimedia development we have found wonderful treasures in our software and our equipment; functions that they can perform that we did not know were possible, instructions written in the manual that we never saw before.
The same is true of the bible, much more so. The bible was written by men who were under the inspiration of God, the Holy Spirit. As we read it, the Holy Spirit who lives in very born again believer in Jesus Christ, begins to bring us revelation and insight that unlocks our full potential.
Revelation by its nature is progressive, therefore, as we make progress in our Christian walk the bible begins to release its hidden treasures. As we apply this revelation to our lives it manifests in us as the wisdom of God.
The choice is ours; follow the Maker’s instructions and be built-up as God intended or ignore the bible and its life application and do the best we can based on our own understanding. What will you do?
Lord Jesus, thank you for doing what our Father told you. Amen

God is Good

God is Good
Video: http://www.getthegist.net/
Romans 8:28…… And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
I am amazed and blessed by how good God is. I am grateful to God for all that I have; my health, my family and my life. I am alive because of the goodness of God. Hallelujah.
This week’s Gist shares the same title as the first lesson of the first module in our online discipleship course called GlobalTFL. You can sample the ‘God is Good’ Teaching Note from the GlobalTFL website by following this link: http://www.globaltfl.com/free-note.html Please take a look and tell us what you think.
The course teaching is much more comprehensive than the Gist. The full Training for Life (TFL) curriculum is aimed to take the student into a profound revelation of God’s word in order to raise-up Christians who are alive and active in the 21st century church. The Gist is an appetizer and TFL is the main course.
Now, back to the subject for this Gist…… Everything that is good has God in it.
The word G-o-o-d has G-o-d in it. The word G-o-d is not in s-i-c-k nor is it in b-a-d. Amen?
It is God who puts a spring in our step and a song in our heart. It is God who causes us to rejoice in the sunshine and in the rain. It is God who has enabled us to help each other. It is God who works all things together for good because God is good all the time.
Thank you Jesus, you have given us life for ever more. Amen.

Get Ready

Get Ready
Video: http://thegist.weebly.com/
Matthew 3:3….. This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "
We can never say this too often; “the time is short and Jesus Christ is coming back soon”. There have appeared a fresh outpouring of End Time products, everything from movies, TV programmes, books and radio broadcasts. They are flooding into not only Christian but secular outlets. It seems that everybody is aware of the turbulent acceleration of catastrophic events pointing the way to an inevitable conclusion.
Now, more than ever, we need to appropriate the same spirit that raised-up John the Baptist to prepare the way for the arrival of Jesus. For John it was to herald the first coming of Jesus but for the new generation of prophetic proclaimers it is for His second coming.
People from all walks of life and all faiths are looking for answers; explanations for the out-of-control instability for our deranged planet and equally the lawless, sordid and unrestrained expressions of man’s inhumanity to man.
Now is the time for Holy Spirit fuelled Christians to cry out with one voice, “repent and get ready, Jesus is on His way back”. This is no time for apathetic excuses or well-informed discussions. It is a time for action.
Politicians have let us down, the banks have let us down and religion has let us down. It is time for a Christian Revival, it is time to wake up the dead church and bring back numbed and dumbed Christians to life. It is time for a Resuscitation Revolution; a spiritual defibrillation. Are we too focussed on 666 when we should be calling 999 – this is an emergency….
Listen, can you hear the sound of Jesus approaching? Get ready!
Lord Jesus, thank you for the wake-up call. Amen

The Heavenlies

The Heavenlies
Video: http://thegist.weebly.com/
Hebrews 13:2…… Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
Last week we talked about ministering angels. This week I want to talk about the activity that takes place in an unseen realm around us and in the heavenlies above us often without us knowing anything about it. A lot of what does not happen to us is a result of this unseen angelic activity.
When we started to pioneer the church in Drumchapel, Glasgow we stirred-up a hornet’s nest in the heavenly realms. The local youths threw petrol bombs at the church building, they stole our cars and they set them on fire. We know that our battle is not against people but against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12) so, we prayed.
Initially, the situation got worse until, one night, something happened in the worship. It was as though the musicians had improved dramatically and the quality of the sound system was excellent. There was an element to the worship that we had never heard before. On reflection, we are all convinced that angels had joined in.
Before the end of the worship, a woman with five children burst through the door of the sanctuary. “I had to come, I had to follow the light!”
Apparently, from some considerable distance, she had seen a light in the sky and she had followed it. It led her to us where the light shone directly above our building. We believe that angels had led this lady, with her children, to what for her became a haven of peace.
We also believe that on that very night there was a spiritual bi-election and Jesus was voted into the seat of government. The enemy was ousted-out and Jesus took up His rightful place of authority as governor of the area.
Soon the local people began to get saved and become active in the church. Dramatic changes took place in many lives over the next eight years. The whole community was miraculously transformed.
Without a doubt, from that eventful night of worship, many angels came and went. Some came to assist us and others came to our rescue. Most of the time we did not see them, they mingled with the others, to us they were benevolent strangers.
Lord Jesus, thank you for helping us in ways we don’t even know. Amen.

Angels

Angels
Video: http://thegist.weebly.com/
Hebrews 1:14 …… Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
With our minds still full of images of nativity angels and the Christmas card angels fluttering away for another year, it is as good a time as any to ask the question; are angels still around today?
Personally, I have heard some fantastic accounts of angelic visitations from people that I know and trust. However, my encounters with angels have been, on the most part, less flamboyant but none the less overwhelming.
The accompanying video with this Gist tells the story of a snow angel. Rather than repeat it I will tell you of another occasion, this time with an invisible angel.
Again, it was winter-time and I was rushing to catch a plane. After driving for fifteen minutes or so, my road was blocked by a fallen tree. The police told me to take another route but it was many miles of a diversion. I was going to be cutting it fine to reach the airport on time.
In my haste, I took a bend too quickly and the front near-side of my car hit a crash barrier. I felt the thud and I heard the sound of the headlight breaking. Despondent, I thought, “that is enough! Clearly I am not destined to go on this trip”.
I reversed into a small lane to turn around and go home but decided to inspect the damage to my car. When I looked there was no damage at all.
Immediately I knew that an angel had buffered my crash and God had mended the damage. I knew that it was the devil who was trying to stop me and I now knew that God was on my side.
I decided to carry on even although I was well delayed by all these shenanigans, or so I thought…..
If there had been no delays, it would have taken me an hour to reach the airport. Now, with the addition of another 20 miles detour plus stoppage time, well you can do the maths. When I reached the airport I looked at my watch and it was one hour since I had left home. My detour and delays had not added any extra time.
Are angels still around today? You bet they are!
Lord Jesus, thank you for despatching angels to look after us. Amen.

Redemption

Redemption
Video: http://thegist.weebly.com/
Ephesians 1:7 ……. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace…
Praise God that those of us who know Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Saviour can enter into this New Year with a clean slate. The blood of Jesus has bought us back from sin and death and we have been redeemed by the grace of God.
The wonderful, good news is that anyone who repents, asks for forgiveness and turns away from their sinful, selfish ways will be forgiven and restored into a living relationship with God our Father, through Jesus His Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.
What a great start to the New Year. What a great start to a whole new life.
All of us want to change in some way, many of us make New Year’s Resolutions and almost all of us break those resolutions before the end of January. We need help to change and God Almighty has made a way. The blood of Jesus can purify us from all unrighteousness. When we meet Jesus at Calvary, He washes us clean, we are born again and we have a completely new start in life.
The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness and we become progressively stronger as we resolve to follow Jesus.
Even if we sin, there is a way of restoration outlined in 1 John 1:9.
God wants us to succeed, He wants us to be victorious, to be overcomers, to be more than conquerors.
If you are reading this and you are not a Christian, you can become a Christian today. You will be born again as a brand new creation in Christ. If you have strayed away from Jesus you can choose to get back on course by asking His forgiveness. God loves prodigals.
One way or another, today can be the day of a fresh start for you, a completely new beginning in the grace of God.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your blood that still flows from the cross at Calvary. Amen
